Riding the High

In the first post on our Roll-Acosta Life blog, I talked about how life is a rollercoaster, with twists and turns, ups and downs.  Life seems to have been a series of a lot of ups for our family recently.  Looking back to this time just one year ago, things were a little different for us then.
Julian and I were trying to get pregnant.
We were in our first year of marriage still (that pivotal first year...if you're married, you know what I'm talking about).
Julian had finished his degree, but was stuck at his old job, and he felt like he was wasting his life away while waiting for the next step.
We were contemplating a move to Virginia, and we were both actively seeking jobs, which is very stressful all by itself.
Needless to say, I think we were in a valley at that point...but then the first ray of sunshine came through.

On May 26th, 2010, I woke up anxiously at 6:30 AM (which was early for me then).  Julian and I had been trying to get pregnant for 8 months already.  And though I had taken lots of pregnancy tests over those 8 months, I woke up that morning feeling...ummm...cautiously optomistic.  I went into the restroom and peed on a stick (yup, the ever so glamourous way that women check to see if the miracle of life has started inside their bodies).  I put the test on the counter, washed my hands, and swore not to look at the results until my husband was looking at it with me.  So I woke him up and dragged him to the bathroom so we could see the results together.  As we saw the lines forming into a little blue "plus sign," I instantly started to tear up and my husband said the absolutely sweetest thing he could possibly say at that moment...
"Congratulations! You're going to be a mommy!"

For good measure, I took another test just to make sure (hence the photo with 2 positive tests above).  As my parents will tell you, I was never any good at keeping secrets.  And as much as I knew we should wait until I had gotten further along in the pregnancy, I just could not hold the secret in.  I called my friend, Meredith, who lives down the street from me, and asked her for a ride to work (I didn't really need a ride, but I needed some reason for her to come to my house).  When she pulled up in my driveway, I ran outside, waving my pee sticks with joy.  After all, she had come over to show me her pee sticks on the day they found out they were having a baby too!
Then I sent my mom a text with the photo above.  And she called me soon thereafter filled with joy!  When I got to work, I had to tell my supervisor/friend Katy! And that night, we Skyped Julian's family to let them know...the look on their faces was priceless! And we told the rest of my immediate family over speaker phone that night, too!
That was just the beginning of the high.  A week later on June 2nd, our niece Lauren was born!

And soon thereafter in June, Katy's baby Emersyn was born and Meredith's baby Jackson was born.  We celebrated our first wedding anniversary on June 12th.  In August, Camp Acosta took Lakeview by storm for Fish Camp 2010.
In late August, on my 28th birthday, we found out we were having a baby girl!
In September, Julian landed a job with Verizon.  He loved his job right from the start and things were finally starting to look up for him, so he got a new truck!
And with the arrival of our little girl on February 3rd, everyday is a good day, made so bright by the little sunshine in our lives.  Add in our home being built and this coaster is definitely at the top!

It's been great riding this high, even if there have been a few lows along the way.  My great-grandmother passed away on August 28th, 2010.  I love my Grandma Pauline so much and I miss her everyday.  The holidays were particularly rough, with a personal family tragedy and being away from family since I could not travel while pregnant.  Just recently, I found out that my Grandpa Chief has cancer.
Through it all, I am reminded that life is a rollercoaster and that we can squeal with delight at the peaks and hold on and pray through the valleys.  Either way, I wouldn't trade this ride for anything in the world!

Silly Jilly - Talking Business

Everyday, when I pick Jilly up from school, I ask her how her day was. Usually, I don't get much response...I mean, she's only 3 months old so of course she would not answer me. But this past week, I was pleasantly surprised when I would ask her about her day and she would answer me! The entire drive home (about 10 minutes), she sits in her car seat and she says "ahhhh ahhhh ahhhh ahhhh" and she grunts...and then she pauses until I respond and ask her to tell me more. Looks like our little girl is in the talking business like her daddy!
When Julian was little, he would talk so much. One time, someone asked him why he talked so much and his reply was "I'm in the talking business."
Silly Jilly...I hope she always wants to tell me about her day and that she stays in the talking business, too!

Silly Jilly - Laughing Baby!

What a special treat this is!  I have been wanting to upload a video onto the blog for quite some time now, but just kept procrastinating.
But this morning, when we discovered that Jilly would laugh when we tickled her belly, we broke out the video camera so that all could see some of Jilly's belly laughs.  Enjoy!

Life as a House: Setting a Foundation and Leaving Our Mark

By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert builder, and someone else is building on it. - 1 Corinthians 3:10

They've started building our house!  In the past few weeks, Julian and I have gone by our lot to see the new developments, and we were so excited when we turned the corner to see the workers out at our house.  They were working on the frame for the foundation so that they can level the ground and begin to pour the slab.

Once we discovered that they were going to be pouring concrete soon, I called our super and asked if we could leave our prints in the driveway...and he said yes! So we went by and left our prints in the bottom corner of the driveway, and I am sure we will see it everytime we pull up to the house.

Julian put his left hand, I put my right hand, and we put the baby's foot prints in the middle!

We went back to see the prints once the cement dried.  I teared up just thinking about pulling up to our new house everyday, knowing that it is really ours.  I know I will cry the day we move in out of sheer joy and I can only imagine that I will cry when we have to leave that house...I mean, we left our mark in the driveway for crying out loud!

And now they have begun the framework for the walls of the house!  It is all coming together so quickly!

As I reflect on the progress that has been made, I am reminded that a strong foundation is the key to a strong home and a strong life.  When Julian and I first got married, we decided what values we would build our family on.  Together, we decided that the Acosta family would represent passion, loyalty, communication, trust, selflessness, dependability, unity, and most of all, LOVE!  Couple that with a marriage and life based in faith and a commitment to God and I'd say we have built a strong foundation!

Silly Jilly - Funny Photos

Of the nearly 2000 pictures I have taken of Jillian since she was born, not all the pictures have been "picture perfect."  Here are a few of my favorite funny photos of Silly Jilly!
Like this one...

Or the time her headband bow ended up over her eyes...
"Hey, who turned off the lights?!"

I also love photos of crying babies...
...especially when they have bunny ears on!
And then there was the day last week when I picked her up from school and she decided to flip me off...
"That's what I think of you leaving me at daycare, Mommy"

  And this one...
Daddy makes the same face when the Yankees lose, Jilly Bear!

...Or her best Zoolander face

Yes, Jilly, you really are the Star of Mommy's Blog!

Happy 3 Months, Jillian!

Our precious baby girl is 3 months already!!!  And what a fun month it has been for Jilly Bean!  She celebrated another major holiday and she started school this month.  She is eating and napping well at school.

She is learning to roll and pushes off with her legs, which is great so she can learn to crawl in the next few months.

Her smiles happen more often and are more intentional, like when we pick her up from school or when she watches morning cartoons.

She has grown so much, going from size 1 diapers to size 2 diapers.  If I had to guess, I would say she probably weighs around 13.5 lbs!  What a big, healthy baby!  And her hair is getting so long.  I call her "Crazy Hair" (as you can tell from these pictures)!!!

Jilly is getting better at using her hands, as she frequently uses them to take out her paci, and even occasionally putting it back in all by herself.  She loves looking at her hands and sucking on them, too!

She is a great baby, going to sleep by 9 PM, waking at 4 AM to eat, and then waking for the day between 7 and 8.  And she is a happy baby when she wakes up (just like her Daddy)!

All in all, Julian and I are so blessed with our little miracle and we grow more in love with her everyday.  Happy 3 Months, Jilly Bear Cosita Preciosa Crazy Hair Silly Jilly Bean Baby Girl!  Mommy and Daddy love you so much! xoxo
